The International Mineralogical Association is an umbrella organisation uniting professional associations from 38 countries, and its quadrennial meeting is the largest global forum for making contacts and exchanging information with mineral scientists from around the globe. The 22nd meeting in Melbourne, Australia, will be the first such meeting held in Australia and only the second in the southern hemisphere. The meeting will be hosted by the Geological Society of Australia, and held in the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, between 13–17 of August, 2018.

The conference, bracketed by opening and closing ceremonies, will last five days, each featuring a plenary lecture by an eminent speaker and several parallel sessions of shorter oral presentations spanning a diverse range of mineralogical topics. Keynote speakers include:

Additional science content, changing on a daily basis, will be presented in extensive poster halls, with refreshments provided in the early evening to stimulate and inspire lively discussion. The conference dinner will be the high spot of the social programme. We will be running exhibition halls through the whole meeting, at which delegates can explore the commercial stands of instrument manufacturers, professional organisations, publishers and mineral dealers, and chat to exhibitors. Small meeting rooms in the centre will host business meetings for various committees of the IMA and other organisations.

Field trips before and after the conference will give delegates a mineralogists’ eye view of a range of exotic Australasian landscapes, and we will also be organsiing and facilitating less scientifically oriented activites for accompanying persons, in the fascinating city of Melbourne and its hinterland.

The Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC)

The Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) was formed in July 2006 by a merger between the Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names (CNMMN) and the Commission on Classification of Minerals, at the request of both commissions. The Chairman has published a paper on this merger in Elements, Volume 2, Number 6, December 2006, p. 388. The current and past activities and reports of the (CNNNC-IMA) can be found at their website. IMA Reports prior to 1998 published in the Canadian Mineralogist

Robert F. Martin, editor The Canadian Mineralogist, has kindly let the Mineralogical Society of American host a set of International Mineralogical Association Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names reports that were compiled by the Mineralogical Association of Canada and the Canadian Mineralogist on the occasion of the IMA 17th General Meeting in Toronto (August 1998). These reports are also available at the Mineralogical Association of Canada both as an electronic version and as a Booklet.
